How Long Does GACC Registration Really Take? A Realistic Timeline

If you're exporting food to China, one of the first questions you'll ask is: how long will GACC registration actually take? The answer depends heavily on your product category and how well you prepare.

How Long Does GACC Registration Really Take? A Realistic Timeline

What We Saw
GACC classifies food products into different risk levels, and each follows a different timeline. A correctly prepared application for low-risk products can be approved in 1–2 weeks. However, other categories can stretch into months — and the gap between the fastest and slowest timelines is wider than many exporters expect.

The process breaks down into three clear tiers.

How Long Does GACC Registration Really Take? A Realistic Timeline

Low-risk categories (GACC-1-1) typically take 1–2 months from start to finish. Most general food products that can be registered directly fall here. If your documents are complete and correct, the actual approval can come through in as little as 1–2 weeks.

Medium-risk categories (GACC-1-2) require additional scrutiny and documentation. The full process usually takes 2–4 months.

High-risk categories (GACC-1-3) face the longest timeline: 4–12 months. These products require official recommendation from the competent authority in the exporter's country before GACC will even process the application. That recommendation process alone can take several months.

Under GACC Decree No. 280, effective from 1 June 2026, 17 food categories require this official recommendation and face stricter registration requirements. They include meat and meat products, dairy products, aquatic products, bird's nests, bee products, eggs and egg products, nuts and seeds, dried fruits, and health foods. If your product falls into one of these categories, factor in extra time before submitting to GACC.

The 2026 regulatory update brought several changes worth noting. Decree No. 280 replaced the previous Decree 248. Registration is now valid for five years, with eligible registrations automatically renewed unless listed as an exception. The catalogue of products requiring official recommendation has been reduced from 18 to 17 categories. Cold storage facilities for terrestrial animal-derived food and aquatic products must now also register.

Why This Matters for You
The single biggest reason for delays is not the regulator's processing speed. It is application errors. Common mistakes include selecting the wrong food category, misclassifying HS codes, or submitting incomplete documentation. If your application is correct from the start, approval can happen in weeks. If it is not, you could wait months without receiving any response from GACC — and without knowing why.

The timeline also has direct commercial consequences. A delayed registration means a held container, a missed launch window, and an importer who grows nervous. Exporters who treat GACC registration as a form-filling exercise often discover the cost of a mistake at the port. Those who treat it as a regulatory gateway — with the same seriousness as a contract or a shipping document — are the ones whose goods clear on schedule.

Takeaway

The timeline is in your control more than it appears. Low-risk products can clear in 1–2 months if the paperwork is right — but the most common mistake is misclassifying the HS code or selecting the wrong food category at the point of submission. These are small errors with outsized consequences. Medium-risk products need 2–4 months. High-risk products need 4–12 months, and the clock starts with your home country's competent authority, not with GACC.

For high-risk categories especially, our practical advice is simple: start the process at least six months before you plan to ship. That buffer turns a crisis into a timeline. The most reliable way to shorten your registration is to ensure your application is accurate before submission. If you are unsure about your product's classification or documentation requirements, professional guidance at the preparation stage costs far less than a delayed container.
